Sales Tips from Comedians: Open with a Personal Story and Segue

Want to be a more successful salesperson? Then you need to tell more captivating stories.

Here’s one simple storytelling tip you can learn from stand-up comedy:

Your stories don’t have be about what you’re selling to inspire your prospects.

This story is about my son (and part-time foil) finding Fruit Loops under the couch during our family vacation to the mountains last September.

Watch how at the end of the story, I'm able to segue into the topic of sales:

“I got upset for a second, then I thought: you know what, that’s a lot like sales.”

This is what great comedians do on stage. They use segues to seamlessly jump from one topic to another without you feeling like they’re abruptly changing the subject.

Remember, when you think about storytelling during the sales process, it doesn't necessarily have to be about your clients or product or service.

Your captivating story can be about literally anything. At the end, just connect your story back to what you’re selling with a clever segue.
